What are Sacred Pleasures Socials?
Sacred Pleasures is more than a place to learn and play: it is also a community of open-minded, sex-positive and whole-hearted people. Many SP regulars have been coming to events for years, whenever they can or feel inspired to, while at the same time we always welcome new people, each of whom brings their own special flavour. Although in some spaces, there are clear “teachers” and “students”, we don’t believe that our roles are so fixed: since everybody’s experience in life is different, everybody has a perspective to offer, something to teach, something to learn. Socials are one of the ways we encourage these contributions.
So our socials are relaxed, friendly spaces where you can hang out, mingle and get to know each other without too much structure around it.
How are socials organised?
Socials are organised by core team members Faerie & Marti and hosted in the home of Tony & Sarah, two of our longest-standing community members.
Generally they are relaxed, no-agenda evenings in which people gather, have some food and drink, we do some simple icebreakers and then all hang out.
We aim to have 1/3rd lovers (regular SP members), 1/3rd friends (those who’ve attended once or twice before) and 1/3rd newbies. This balance works well for everyone, allowing people to feel the SP vibe while also meeting new friends.
Who can attend socials?
Socials are open to those who’ve attended SP events and workshops and those who haven’t. We aim to keep a balance between new faces and old timers, so we sell tickets roughly in this ratio:
One-third newbies // One-third people who’ve been to a few events // One-third long-term SP regulars
By doing this we aim for a nice balance of people and a welcoming atmosphere that allows new people to get a flavour of our community while people who’ve been around for a while can catch up with old friends and make new ones.
We particularly encourage existing community members to bring their friends to socials so they can meet us and see how lovely and friendly our community really is.
How can I get involved?
There are many ways you can get involved with the SP socials, including:
– attending whenever you can
– bringing your friends along
– suggesting cool ideas for future socials
– giving feedback on the socials you attend
– offering to host a social at your home*
– taking the lead on coordinating socials*
* hosting and coordination are things we invite existing members of the community to participate in. If you are brand-new to Sacred Pleasures, please come along to some socials and workshops first.[/EXPAND]
Why does it cost money to attend a social?
Unlike workshops, which are our bread & butter, socials are designed to be community events which no-one makes money from. However there is always a cost involved in putting on events: the administration to put them online, the cost of food and drink on the day, a small contribution to our hosts and other bits and pieces. The money you pay to attend the social goes to covering these costs.
After each social we sometimes have a little bit leftover, and that’s added to the SP Social Fund. This is a fund we use to donate money to a relevant cause or offer it as a bursary for members of the community to attend sex-positive workshops or events – either ours or others’.
When is the next social and how often do they happen?
In 2017 we plan to hold 4 seasonal socials across the year at Tony & Sarah’s place in Hackney Central. The dates for our socials this year are:
Thurs 16th March
Weds 7th June
Tues 5th Sept
Thurs 30th November
Tickets typically go online 4-6 weeks before a social and tend to sell out a few days before the event happens. So please check back here and book your places when they are online. We look forward to seeing you there!
